Michael Golden: "Transforming Media Companies" 10.10.2017 - 10:01 von Josephien Albrecht

Jeff Jarvis is introducing Michael Golden, Vice Chairman, The New York Times Company, and President of WAN-IFRA (USA). He is holding the first keynote today about transforming media companies. At the moment The New York Times has over 2 million online subscribers. "Our stragety is to make journalism worth paying for!", says Golden.

Stories that stand apart are just as important as to meet the needs of your audience.

During the last quarter of 2016 and the first one in 2017 New York Tines increased the number of their subscribers distinctly. Golden names the election of Donald Trump as a reason: "What have been terrible for the world has been extraordinary good for The New York Times!"

To sum up the strategy of the Times:

1. They work on their brand position to provide journalism that is worth paying for it.

2. A competitive strategy:  NYTimes is a serious newspaper that helps subscribers to understand what is happening in the world.

3. Metrics and goals to examine the increase of subscribers and users.

The reader first is the key to success 10.10.2017 - 10:12 von Josephien Albrecht

New York Times is not much into advertising, “You can say that’s good or bad, but we never did that”. Reliable sources to produce reliable news are the most important way to increase engagement with your audience, “they have to believe you”. Regarding the future of print, Golden is confident that it is here to stay, even if that doesn’t mean that the online sector is less important: “Users have stayed with print because it’s a real value.”
